Open Road Films, LLC is an American independent film production and distribution company based in Los Angeles, California. It was founded on March 26, 2011, by Tom Ortenberg as a joint venture between AMC Theatres and Regal Entertainment Group. The company gained prominence when its 2015 film Spotlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Company history

In March 2011, AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment Group announced Tom Ortenberg as chief executive officer of the new company. Ortenberg, formerly of Lionsgate Films and The Weinstein Company, hired Jason Cassidy as president of marketing, Elliott Kleinberg as general counsel and executive vice president of operations and business affairs, Steven Andriuzzo as chief financial officer, and Ben Cotner as senior vice president of acquisitions in April 2011. A home entertainment distribution deal with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment was signed in June 2011, and a pay-TV deal with Netflix was also signed that month, expiring in 2016. The studio's first release, Killer Elite, premiered on September 23, 2011. In October 2013, a pay-TV deal with Showtime was signed, beginning in 2017 and expiring in 2020. The home distribution deal with UPHE was extended in February 2014 through 2017. On October 30, 2014, an international deal with FilmNation Entertainment was announced. Open Road's 2015 film Spotlight received six Academy Award nominations and won Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 88th Academy Awards, though it drew criticism from a New York Times author for its portrayal of the Church's handling of sexual abuse cases and for its depiction of Jack Dunn.

Management

In August 2017, Rob Friedman took over as Global Road's chairman and CEO following Eric Hohl's departure. Rodolphe Buet became president of international that October, with Lynn Harris stepping in as president of worldwide production the next month. Jack Pan was named president of worldwide theatrical marketing early in 2018. The following March, the company added several international staff: Charlotte Van Weede as president of international sales, Brad Kembel as executive vice president of distribution and operations, Melissa Martinez as executive vice president of international marketing, and Sarah Genazzani as director of international marketing. Tatyana Joffe, executive vice president of international sales, extended her contract to collaborate with the new team.
