History
In May 2016, following the mixed reception to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. Pictures created DC Films as a division to oversee DC Entertainment film productions, appointing Jon Berg and Geoff Johns as co-chairmen. The division aimed to better compete with Marvel Studios' franchise. In December 2017, Berg left his role to form a production company, while Johns remained in an advisory capacity and as president of DC Entertainment. Warner Bros. then sought a new studio head. The division was later reorganized under Walter Hamada as president. Following the merger of WarnerMedia with Discovery, Inc. in April 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery overhauled operations, leading Hamada to step down in October 2022. DC Films was dissolved and replaced by DC Studios, with Gunn and Safran hired to lead the new studio and develop the DC Universe as a soft reboot of the DCEU.
Production library
DC Films produced 13 DCEU films from Suicide Squad (2016) to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), plus standalone films Joker (2019) and The Batman (2022). Aquaman and Joker each grossed over $1 billion. DC Studios' first production was the television series The Penguin (2024), a spin-off from The Batman. Its DC Universe releases began with the animated series Creature Commandos in 2024 and the film Superman in 2025. Non-DCU productions fall under the DC Elseworlds label. The studio's first animated feature film is Dynamic Duo (2028). DC Studios also partners with OBB Sound, DC Comics, HBO Max, and YouTube on podcasts such as DC Studios Showcase: The Official Podcast.
