Background
Side Walk Slam, a three-piece punk rock band from Southern Illinois, took its name from a wrestling move made famous by WCW's Booker T. The group started playing together in 1996 and hit the road two years later. Their debut album, Rock Anthems From the Midwest, came out independently in 1999. A year after that, they signed with Boot to Head Records and put out 2 Steps Forward, 5 Steps Back. In July 2000, they were scheduled to tour with Calibretto 13, a band from Kokomo, Indiana that had just joined Tooth and Nail Records.
Side Walk Slam asked Calibretto if they could play a ten-minute opening slot during Calibretto's set at the Cornerstone Music Festival. Watching from backstage, Tooth and Nail's Brandon Ebel saw the performance and signed them on the spot. All three of the band's Tooth and Nail albums were recorded with Bill Stevenson at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado. Their first tour under the new label, after releasing Give Back, featured The Dingees and Ghoti Hook.
