History

Hostyle Gospel formed in 2003 from a central Illinois group called Elite M.O.C., originally with only Raynard Glass and Demetrius Morton. Fontaine Pizza joined in 2005. The group also includes other members handling music production, graphic design, and website management. In 2013, Hostyle Gospel partnered with the Champaign School of Music to host the Family Rock Jam Session for the Champaign/Urbana community, the first Christian hip hop performance for an educational program in a Champaign community.

Following that event, the group made its on-air debut on 97.9 Jamz WJWZ with the single Break. Later in 2013, the album Desperation was featured in Gospel Synergy magazine as new music to watch. On October 11, Hostyle Gospel performed with KB, Da' T.R.U.T.H., and MC Jin at the Flavor Fest Urban Leadership Conference 2014 in Tampa, Florida. In 2015, the group performed on Bobby Jones Present, where Jones discussed his views on Christian hip hop as a tool for bringing people closer to Jesus Christ.

On April 19, 2016, Hostyle Gospel released the single Skittles & Iced Tea with John Givez, addressing the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case and themes of freedom, liberty, justice, and human rights. They also released the single Clap with Gemstones on June 8, 2016. According to a 2018 article by Jesus Wired, MC Jin was the first choice for Clap but had other obligations, so Gemstones was used instead. On October 14, 2016, the group released its fourth studio album, Hostyle Takeover, featuring Gemstones, John Givez, Fred Lynch, and beat production from Tone Jonez.

Reception

In 2013, gospel music historian Bob Marovitch of the Journal of Gospel Music gave the album Desperation a 3/5 review, describing the group as a no-nonsense battle axe who loves the world and its people enough to help them mightily. On October 23, 2014, Brain Magazine (fr) published an article praising Hostyle Gospel as a benchmark for how true Christian rappers should record and conduct themselves. In 2015, Cross Rhythms selected the tracks Praise, Turn It Up, and Rock for airplay on 101.8FM Cross Rhythms City Radio in the UK.
