Lauren Alaina Kristine Suddeth was born on November 8, 1994, in Rossville, Georgia. She first gained national attention as the runner-up on the tenth season of American Idol, finishing behind Scotty McCreery. Her debut album, Wildflower, came out on October 11, 2011. Her second album, Road Less Traveled, followed on January 27, 2017, and its title track became her first number one on the Country Airplay chart. Later that year, she scored a second number one when her diamond-certified duet with Kane Brown, “What Ifs,” topped five Billboard charts at once. Brown was a friend and former classmate. Over the next few years, Alaina became a go-to duet partner, appearing on number-one collaborations with Hardy, Devin Dawson, and Dustin Lynch. Her third studio album, Sitting Pretty on Top of the World, arrived on September 3, 2021.
Alaina competed on the twenty-eighth season of Dancing with the Stars, finishing fourth with partner Gleb Savchenko. She has won two CMT Music Awards, one Academy of Country Music Award, and has been nominated twice for Country Music Association Awards. On February 12, 2022, she achieved a major milestone by becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry, inducted by her childhood hero Trisha Yearwood. She is currently the youngest member of the Opry.
Alaina’s parents are Kristy (born 1972) and Jerry Eugene “J.J.” Suddeth (1971–2024). Her father worked as a process technician in Chattanooga, Tennessee; her mother now works as an actress and TV host. At age eight, Alaina won the talent competition at the Southern Stars Pageant. The next year, she performed on the Kids talent stage at Chattanooga’s Riverbend Festival, returning annually until age twelve, when she won the chance to perform on the festival’s main stage. At ten, she traveled to Orlando, Florida, for the American Model and Talent Competition, beating out 1,500 other kids. She sang with the Georgia Country Gospel Music Association’s children’s group. At twelve, she made her first trip to Nashville. In 2009, she won the WinniSTAR youth talent contest at Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park. She also wrote songs, including “Leaving” and “Set Me Free.”
Alaina was inspired to sing by her cousin Holly Witherow, who had a brain tumor. Before Idol, she worked at CiCi’s Pizza.
