The first confrontation ended with a 1–0 victory for Guadalajara. The rivalry flourished after the second match in 1943, when Chivas defeated Club América 7–2. After Club América struggled in the late 1950s, they hired Fernando Marcos, who transformed them into contenders. Chivas then won a record six consecutive titles. The late 1950s through the mid-1960s was Chivas' best era, winning 7 of their 11 league titles, interrupted only by Zacatepec in 1958 and Club Deportivo Oro in 1963. The 1980s was Club América's best decade, winning five titles in five years: three consecutive starting in 1984, then two consecutive starting in 1988. After these golden ages, the two teams have only won four titles between them, two apiece. In the 1982–83 semi-final second leg, a brawl known as 'La Bronca del 83' occurred, resulting in Chivas eliminating Club América. The following season, Club América came from behind on aggregate to defeat Chivas in the only league final between the two teams. From 1983 through 2000, Club América recorded only 6 losses out of 43 matches against Chivas. In the Clausura 2005 tournament, a memorable 3–3 draw occurred on 13 March at Estadio Azteca, with Francisco Palencia scoring his 100th and 101st career goals. In 2007, Club América set the record for most wins in a year by defeating Chivas four times. In 2016, the teams met a record seven times; Club América had three victories, two draws, and two defeats, going undefeated in playoff meetings.
