Production
For Asura, stunt coordinator Peng Zhang, who worked on The Twilight Saga and Ant-Man, directed the film. Alibaba Pictures produced it, with a script by Zhenjian Yang, writer of Painted Skin: The Resurrection. Costumes came from Oscar winner Ngila Dickson, audio from Martin Hernandez, and visual effects from Charlie Iturriaga. Filming took place across seven Chinese locations, including Ningxia, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and Liupanshui.
Reception
Asura earned 49 million yuan ($7.3 million U.S.) in its opening weekend. It was pulled from cinemas after a statement on social media that gave no explanation. A representative from Zhenjian Film later told Chinese news site Sina that the decision was made not only because of the bad box office, and that they planned to make changes and release the film again. Despite these statements, the film has never been exhibited or marketed anywhere again.
