Double, Double, Toil and Trouble

Double, Double, Toil and Trouble is a 1993 American Halloween TV movie for children, broadcast on ABC on October 30, 1993. Its title comes from the witches' chant in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

The story follows 7-year-old twins Kelly and Lynn Farmer (played by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen). Their parents, Don and Christine, are deep in debt and about to lose their home. During Halloween, they visit Christine's cruel Aunt Agatha to ask for a loan, but she refuses. While waiting outside, the girls meet Agatha's gravedigger, who explains that Agatha has an evil twin sister, Sophia, trapped inside the house.

Two hundred years earlier, a powerful witch hid her moonstone—a rare gem granting its owner magic—before being burned at the stake. As children, Agatha and Sophia, tired of being twins, searched for the stone to stop looking alike. Agatha found it, hid it from her sister, and used its magic to torment her. Years later, on Halloween, Sophia and her fiancé George (now Agatha's butler) planned to elope.

Out of jealousy, Agatha cast a spell banishing Sophia into the netherworld through a mirror hidden in the attic. On the seventh year, at midnight this Halloween, the spell becomes permanent.

Back home, the twins learn of their parents' financial troubles. Christine says Aunt Sophia would have helped if she were around. Determined, Kelly and Lynn set out to rescue Sophia. The spell can only be broken by twins who possess the moonstone, which Agatha wears around her neck.

While trick-or-treating, the girls swap costumes with other kids to slip away. They meet a homeless man named Mr. N, who dreams of money and fame and agrees to help. The twins carry a toy magic wand won at a party, which has unexplained genuine magical powers (though it's implied the twins themselves are magical). They visit a phony psychic named Lulu, but can't get answers, so they use the wand to find a witches' gathering Agatha will attend.

They hitch a ride on a pumpkin truck, then find a small house in the woods belonging to Oscar, a man who wishes to be taller. He joins them. Meanwhile, Don and Christine discover the girls are missing and call the police.

Agatha learns of their plan through her magic mirror and plots against them, knowing twin power is stronger than her own. The group arrives at the gathering in costume. Agatha reveals her story to the crowd. Mr.
