Monster High

Where Freaky Just Got Fabulous!

Monster High

Monster High is a fashion doll franchise from the United States that spans multiple types of media. It was invented by toy designer Garrett Sander and first released by Mattel on June 11, 2010. The brand is meant for kids between the ages of 7 and 16, though the Skullector line is for people 18 and older. Its characters draw inspiration from monster movies, sci-fi horror, thrillers, cryptids, folklore, myths, fairy tales, and pop culture. The stories follow the teenage offspring of monsters and other mythical beings as they attend a high school with the same name. The franchise became a huge hit with children and earned Mattel a great deal of money. By its third year, it was valued at $1 billion, with over $500 million in sales each year. At one point, it was the second-best-selling doll brand in North America.

Lore & Background

The franchise is set in the fictional American town of New Salem, where teenage children of famous monsters and other mythical creatures attend Monster High, a school renowned for allowing all species of monsters to enroll. The characters' stories were told through a 2D-animated web series, 15 animated TV specials/films, video games, a series of young adult novels written by Lisi Harrison, and other merchandise. The original characters include Frankie Stein (daughter of Frankenstein's monster and his bride), Draculaura (adopted daughter of Dracula), Cleo de Nile (daughter of the mummy pharaoh Ramses de Nile), Clawdeen Wolf (daughter of a werewolf), Lagoona Blue (daughter of a sea monster), Ghoulia Yelps (daughter of zombie parents), and Abbey Bominable (daughter of the Yeti).

Mattel began conceptualizing the franchise in 2007, filing for a trademark of the name 'Monster High' in October of that year. Garrett Sander and his twin brother Darren were inspired after shopping with young girls who were into goth fashion. Darren came up with the slogan '(Where) Freaky Just Got Fabulous!' and noted that because the characters were monsters, they had more freedom to do things ordinary kids could not. Other inspirations included children's interests in Tim Burton and Lady Gaga. The first doll line, featuring the original six characters, was released in 2010, with media and other merchandise following soon after.

Reader's Guide

Monster High's significance lies in its innovative approach to launching a franchise by releasing toys first without a traditional entertainment property, then following with media. Its emphasis on diversity among characters—in visual appearance, personalities, abilities, and cultural backgrounds—set it apart in the doll market. The franchise spawned two spin-off toy lines: Ever After High (2013) and Enchantimals (2017). However, sales declined in 2016, leading to a reboot with a revamped aesthetic and new fictional universe, which was a commercial failure, resulting in discontinuation in 2018. A second relaunch in 2020 with new dolls culminated in a 2021 announcement of an animated TV series and a live-action musical film co-produced by Mattel Television with Nickelodeon. The Nickelodeon show was cancelled in September 2024, with Mattel moving Generation 3 media to YouTube, where new content is produced by Oddbot Animation, including music videos and series such as 'Monster High: The Forgotten Battle of the Bands' (2026) and 'Monster High: Scary Sweet Birthday' (2025). The franchise's legacy includes its lasting impact on doll design and storytelling, as well as its ability to adapt to changing markets.
