Few figures embody Chelsea’s golden age like Petr Čech. Arriving from Rennes in 2004 for £7 million, he instantly became the club's first-choice goalkeeper after Carlo Cudicini suffered a pre-season injury. Over an eleven-year spell, he made 494 appearances, becoming Chelsea's seventh most-capped player ever. His tenure is defined by four Premier League titles, one Champions League, and a staggering 228 clean sheets, the club’s all-time record. Beyond the silverware, his story includes a terrifying head injury against Reading in 2006 that nearly cost him his life, followed by a heroic return wearing a protective headguard.

Lore & Background
In his debut season (2004–05), he set a new Premier League record by going 1,025 minutes without conceding a goal, starting from a clean sheet against Manchester United on his debut until conceding to Leon McKenzie of Norwich City in December 2004. This run earned him the first of four joint-record Premier League Golden Glove awards. His partnership with José Mourinho transformed Chelsea into an impenetrable fortress, conceding just 22 goals in the 2005–06 title-winning season.
The defining moment of his resilience came on 14 October 2006 against Reading at the Madejski Stadium. A collision with Stephen Hunt caused a depressed skull fracture, requiring surgery and three months out. Doctors later stated the injury nearly cost him his life. He returned on 20 January 2007 against Liverpool wearing a rugby-style headguard made by Canterbury of New Zealand, which he wore for the rest of his career.
Despite the loss in that comeback match, he immediately regained form, keeping eight successive league clean sheets to win the Premier League Player of the Month award in April 2007.
Reader's Guide
Petr Čech’s era at Chelsea spanned from July 2004 until his departure in 2015 for £10 million to join city rivals Arsenal. He began his journey at Chmel Blšany in 1999 before moving to Sparta Prague, where he set a Czech league record of 903 minutes without conceding. At Chelsea, he became the only goalkeeper to win the Premier League Golden Glove with two separate clubs (Chelsea and Arsenal) and holds the record for most clean sheets in a single season (24). His consistency was unmatched; he kept 100 Premier League clean sheets in just 180 appearances, the fewest required to reach that milestone. He also holds the club's all-time record with 228 clean sheets across 494 matches.
