Lore & Background
The title was unexpected: Chelsea had never won a major trophy, their post-war league finishes had ranged from 8th to 20th, and they were 12th in October after four straight defeats. Manager Ted Drake, appointed in 1952, had modernised the club, bringing in tougher training and reliable signings from the lower divisions.
Reader's Guide
As champions, Chelsea were invited into the first European Cup, but withdrew under pressure from the Football League, which saw the competition as a distraction.
Chelsea lost only three of their next 25 matches and won the title with a game to spare. Two wins over their main rivals, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and a ten-match unbeaten run in the run-in were key. Captain Roy Bentley was top scorer with 21 goals, and the club's average home crowd of 48,307 was the highest in the division.
