Cummings was selected second overall by the San Diego Clippers in the 1982 NBA draft. He won Rookie of the Year in 1982–83, averaging 23.7 points and 10.4 rebounds. He was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks after the 1983–84 season, where he became a two-time All-Star. In 1989, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs, where he set a career high of 52 points in a win over the Charlotte Hornets. He later returned to the Bucks, then played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Golden State Warriors before retiring.
