1970 European Cup Semi-Final vs Leeds United

Celtic beat English champions Leeds United home and away to reach the 1970 European Cup final.

In the 1969–70 European Cup semi-finals Celtic were drawn against English champions Leeds United, the first time the reigning champions of England and Scotland had met in a fully competitive European tie. George Connelly scored in the opening minute of the first leg at Elland Road to give Celtic a 1–0 lead.

Lore & Background

The second leg was played at Hampden Park on 15 April 1970 before 136,505 spectators, still the record attendance for a competitive European club match. Billy Bremner levelled the tie on aggregate with a long-range shot after 14 minutes, but John Hughes headed Celtic in front two minutes after half-time and Bobby Murdoch, set up by a run from Jimmy Johnstone, made it 2–1 on the night. Celtic went on to lose the final 2–1 to Feyenoord at the San Siro in Milan.
