Lore & Background

Walker started his professional career with Motherwell in 1984, helping the club gain promotion before moving to Celtic in summer 1987 for £350,000. His first season at Celtic was hugely successful, as the Bhoys won the double in 1987–88, their centenary season, and Walker earned his first Scotland cap against Colombia. After loan spells with Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers, he joined Bolton permanently in 1992, forming a prolific partnership with John McGinlay and scoring at Anfield to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup. He returned to Celtic in 1994, won a Scotland recall, and earned his third (and last) cap in October 1994, while Celtic won the Scottish Cup in May 1995. He later joined Sheffield United for £500,000 in early 1996, scoring a respectable 24 goals.

Reader's Guide

Walker's playing career spanned from 1984 to the late 1990s, with notable stints at Celtic (two spells), Bolton Wanderers, and Sheffield United. He earned three Scotland caps, the first against Colombia. After retiring, he became a pundit for STV's Scotsport and later a co-commentator for Sky Sports on Scottish Premiership and Cup games. In 2021, he was prohibited from entering Ibrox Stadium and Celtic Park after comments about Rangers' finances and Celtic's Dubai training camp.
