Format

Set in the 1870s, the series follows Sundance, a gunfighter released after 17 years in prison. In the first episode, set in Georgetown, Colorado, he kills the town villain and is urged to become marshal; he also becomes part owner of the Hotel de Paree, owned by Annette Deveraux (Jeanette Nolan) and her niece Monique (Judi Meredith). Sundance wears a string of polished silver dollars in his black Stetson band, often blinding adversaries. He deals with antagonists and flirts with both Deveraux women, and befriends shopkeeper Aaron Donoger (Strother Martin). Guest stars included Warren Oates.

Production

The program was produced by Milton Krims, Stanley Rubin, and Sam Rolfe, with filming at CBS Studio Center. On its Friday night debut, star Earl Holliman appeared in the premiere of The Twilight Zone an hour later. It aired in black-and-white from 8:30 to 9 p.m. Eastern, competing against The Man from Blackhawk and The Bell Telephone Hour.
