Andrew Catalon, born September 7, 1979, is an American sportscaster who calls NFL on CBS, PGA Tour on CBS, College Basketball on CBS, WNBA on CBS, and NCAA March Madness. He grew up in the Short Hills section of Millburn, New Jersey, graduated from Millburn High School in 1997, and earned a degree from the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 2001. While at Syracuse, he worked for WAER-FM. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Jessica Layton, a news reporter for MSNBC, and their son, CJ.
Career
Catalon started as sports director at WVNY, but the station's news department shut down in September 2003 due to financial troubles. Three months later, in December 2003, he became weekend sports anchor at WNYT. He eventually became the station's primary sports anchor, then requested a demotion to part-time status, which was granted in December 2012. By that time, he was already doing play-by-play for UConn Huskies women's basketball on SNY and Mountain West Conference games on CBS Sports Network.
He also freelanced at WFAN before joining CBS Sports Network full-time on July 19, 2013. He began announcing NFL on CBS games in 2011. He served as a tennis play-by-play announcer for the 2016 Olympic Games and has called the Masters Tournament and PGA Championship. On March 22, 2014, during an NCAA Tournament game between Gonzaga and Oklahoma State, Oklahoma State intentionally fouled Gonzaga's Przemek Karnowski, a poor free throw shooter.
Catalon called the strategy "hack a polack." His broadcast partner Mike Gminski, who is of Polish descent, immediately said "Easy now." Catalon apologized on air for using a racial slur and personally apologized to Karnowski, who tweeted that he appreciated the apology. In 2022, Catalon was inducted into Syracuse University's WAER Hall of Fame.
