In 1483, troops of King Matthias Corvinus conquered the castle, expelling István Peréni. From 1490, administration was entrusted to Buda captain Balázs Ráskay, and later Ferenc Bebek received the castle as a dowry after marrying Ráskay’s daughter.
Reader's Guide
Fiľakovo Castle stands as a testament to the turbulent history of medieval and early modern Slovakia. Its significance lies in its long occupation—from Copper Age settlement through Ottoman rule—and its role as a strategic fortress. The castle’s 1551 Renaissance reconstruction, designed by Italian architect A. da Vedano, reflects the military architectural innovations of the period, including massive pentagonal bastions and artillery positions. The castle’s capture by the Ottomans in 1554 and its use as a sanjak center for 39 years highlights the region’s place in the Ottoman–Habsburg conflicts. Later, the castle was a site of frequent military adjustments due to power struggles within the Habsburg Empire. Today, the conserved ruins and the museum exhibition in the Bebek Bastion offer insight into the castle’s layered history, from its medieval origins to its role in local administration and defense. The castle’s legacy is preserved through ongoing conservation efforts since 1972, making it a key historical landmark in Slovakia.
