Dobrá Voda Castle
Ruined Slovak castle with a history of rebellion and noble transfers.
Dobrá Voda Castle is a ruined castle located in the municipality of Dobrá Voda in the Trnava region of Slovakia. It was presumably built in the last third of the 13th century by Comes Aba from the Hlohovec branch of the Aba clan during a period of declining royal power in the Kingdom of Hungary. The castle played a role in regional power struggles, including occupation by Matthew III Csák in 1316 and involvement in a rebellion against King Sigismund in 1403.

Lore & Background
According to legend, the castle was built by the lover of a local girl who cured the king with water from a local spring. Historically, it was presumably constructed in the late 13th century by Comes Aba. In 1316, Matthew III Csák occupied the castle, and in 1394 it was part of a royal donation to duke Stibor of Stiboricz. During a 1403 rebellion against King Sigismund, the castellan joined the uprising, forcing the royal army to reconquer the castle.

Dobrá Voda Castle's significance lies in its long history of changing ownership and its role in regional conflicts. After 1436 it became property of the Ország family, and through marriages and inheritances passed to the Erdődy family by the late 16th century. The castle was abandoned by the end of the 17th century as the Erdődy family moved to manor houses. It was destroyed during Rákóczi's War of Independence in the early 18th century and burned down in 1762 after being struck by lightning. Its architecture reflects defensive adaptations against Ottoman threats, including a lower castle with cannon bastions and a barbican. The site remains a ruined but historically important structure in Slovakia.
