History
Surfaces came together in 2017. Colin Padalecki first got into making music during high school alongside his cousin, singer Alexa Padalecki. While studying at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, he began posting his songs online. Forrest Frank, who had just graduated from Baylor University and was also from Texas, heard Colin’s music and reached out, inviting him to record on his houseboat.
The duo released their debut album, Surf, under the name Surfaces in December 2017. Its third song, 24 / 7 / 365, has racked up more than 107 million streams on Spotify by 2025. After Surf came out, Forrest Frank put out a separate project in July 2018 with producer Biskwiq (who also makes music as soren under the name tsubi club). That release, called Warm, was released under the alias "Forrest." and served as an escape to sunny beaches from his gloomy life living on a houseboat and working at Abbott Laboratories in Seattle, Washington after college.
Standout tracks include Your Soul and Why Not Me, which have earned over 67 million and 40 million streams on Spotify, respectively. The ukulele heard on Grandpop Uke belonged to Forrest’s grandfather; after recording the song, he said he broke down crying, overwhelmed by emotion for a relative he never met. That same ukulele later appeared on the Surfaces song Alone. In January 2019, the band put out their second album, Where the Light Is, through Caroline Records and Ten Thousand Projects.
Its seventh track, Sunday Best, cracked the top 40 in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and also charted in the top 100 in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. As of December 2024, the song has surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, with much of its rise credited to TikTok. It hit radio in March 2020, and its music video landed on YouTube on July 10, 2019.
