Lore & Background
Founded in 1864 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as the Merchants Bank of Halifax, it changed its name to the Royal Bank of Canada in 1901. Its head office moved to Montreal in 1907, and its corporate headquarters relocated to Toronto in 1976. RBC acquired HSBC's Canadian operations in 2024.
