Playing career
Brookbank began his professional career in the West Coast Hockey League and Central Hockey League before moving to the International Hockey League. During the 2000–01 season he won two professional championships: the Turner Cup with the Orlando Solar Bears and the CHL title with the Oklahoma City Blazers. He later played for several American Hockey League affiliates and made his NHL debut after being claimed by the Nashville Predators in the 2003 waiver draft. Primarily a winger, Brookbank served as an enforcer and recorded 43 NHL fights, 17 of which came in his rookie season. He scored his first NHL goal on January 31, 2004, for the Vancouver Canucks against the Washington Capitals. On February 7, 2009, the Hurricanes traded him along with Josef Melichar and a fourth-round draft pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Jussi Jokinen. He finished that season with Tampa Bay's AHL affiliate and later signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. After a season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL, he retired following the 2013–14 season.
Personal life
Brookbank's younger brother Sheldon also played professional hockey, most recently for the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. An older brother, Leigh, also played. All three brothers are Junior 'A' alumni of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Their father, Murray, served as an assistant coach for the Humboldt Broncos from 2004–05 to 2011–12. Brookbank is a cousin of former NHL player Geoff Sanderson. In 2007 he was named one of the Oklahoma City Blazers' 15 greatest players.

Brookbank signed as a free agent with the Orlando Solar Bears on September 1, 2000. He signed with the Ottawa Senators on July 27, 2001. The Nashville Predators claimed him in the NHL Waiver Draft on October 3, 2003. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on December 17, 2003, then claimed off waivers by Ottawa on December 19, 2003. On December 29, 2003, he was traded to the Florida Panthers, and on January 3, 2004, the Canucks claimed him off waivers. He signed with the Boston Bruins on July 21, 2006, and was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 19, 2006. On July 3, 2007, he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. On February 7, 2009, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 31, 2009, and with the Rockford IceHogs on July 21, 2010.
