Background
Number puzzles appeared in French newspapers in the late 19th century. These weekly puzzles disappeared around World War I. The modern Sudoku was most likely designed anonymously by Howard Garns, a retired architect from Connersville, Indiana, and first published in 1979 by Dell Magazines as Number Place. Garns died in 1989 before seeing his creation become a worldwide phenomenon.
