Wembley Stadium is the national football stadium of England, located in Wembley, London. Opened in 2007, it replaced the original Wembley Stadium, which stood on the same ground from 1923 until 2000. It stages most England home internationals and the FA Cup Final, and ranks among the best-known football grounds on the planet. The Football Association owns it through its subsidiary Wembley National Stadium Ltd and keeps its headquarters there. With 90,000 seats it is the biggest stadium in the UK and second in Europe only to Barcelona's Camp Nou. Under a sponsorship deal it is officially called Wembley Stadium connected by EE.

Background

Rebuilding was meant to start before Christmas 2000 and finish during 2003, but money and legal problems pushed things back. Demolition finally began on 30 September 2002, and the old Twin Towers came down that December. The project suffered further setbacks: arch contractor Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company pulled out and was replaced by the Dutch firm Hollandia, and a carpenter, Patrick O'Sullivan, died in a 2004 accident. Designed by Foster + Partners and HOK Sport (now Populous) and built by the Australian company Multiplex, the new stadium cost £798 million, making it one of the most expensive stadia ever built.
