History
Fuck the Facts got its start in early 1997 as a recording project without a name, run by Topon Das. It stayed unnamed until 1998, when a compilation appearance prompted Topon to pick the name from a track on Naked City’s first album. Topon’s own Dedfuk Records put out a self-titled cassette that gathered everything he had recorded so far. After that, the project released split cassettes with Cult of the Damned, Longdreamdead, and S.M.E.S. In September 2000, the Slovakian label Where Late The Birds Sang issued another full-length cassette, Vagina Dancer. That release leaned into a more experimental, noise-driven side, while the self-titled tape had been more grindcore in style. Between the two full-lengths and the splits, Fuck the Facts began building a name in underground noise and grindcore circles.
The next album, Discoing the Dead, was recorded in 2000 and came out on February 6, 2001, via Ghetto Blaster Recordings—another label Topon ran. The positive response pushed Topon to turn Fuck the Facts into a proper band. Drummer Matt Connell and guitarist Tim Audette joined in late February. The three of them recorded music for a split with Ames Sanglantes before vocalist Brent Christoff came on board in April and bassist Shomir Das joined in May. In May 2001, the band recorded and released the EP Four0ninE, which included a cover of The Beach Boys’ “409.” Shomir left after only three days, but the group carried on as a four-piece. Their first live show happened on August 4, 2001, in Melbourne, Quebec. They played regularly around Ontario and Quebec through the fall, then decided to record another full-length. Before 2001 ended, the new lineup put out Mullet Fever, the follow-up to Discoing the Dead. Billed with the tagline “37 Songs in 35 Minutes,” it had a more punk-influenced grindcore sound but kept some noise elements.
In early 2002, after Mullet Fever was recorded, Mel Mongeon replaced Brent Christoff. She had already guested on an earlier split, but her first official recording as a member was a new version of “The Burning Side” for the Goreland compilation CD on Black Hole Productions. That song had originally appeared on Discoing the Dead, performed by Topon. Since joining, Mel has handled most of the artwork for Fuck the Facts releases.
