The series is set at Elmstead College in the fictional small coastal town of Garrison, Washington. Amy Winslow, an English literature professor specializing in mystery and crime fiction, begins consulting for Travis Burke, a 'big city' police detective who has recently moved to Garrison, after a case involving a student. Amy's widower father, Graham Winslow, is a bestselling author of detective novels and often assists her. Over the course of the films, Amy inserts herself into Burke's investigations, often against his wishes, and their friendship deepens, culminating in a first kiss at the end of the sixth film.
