Sheet cake
A flat, rectangular cake baked in a large pan.
Last updated
A sheet cake is a single-layer cake baked in a large, flat, rectangular pan, typically 2 to 3 inches deep. It is frequently frosted and decorated on the top and borders. Sheet cakes are notable for being inexpensive and widely available pre-made in supermarkets.
Flavors
Sheet cakes come in nearly any flavor, though chocolate and vanilla are the most popular. Home cooks frequently use boxed mixes, which can be enhanced with extras like sprinkles or chocolate chips. Toppings such as nuts, coconut flakes, or chocolate chips may be scattered on top. For a layer cake, a sheet cake can be sliced horizontally, then filled with jam or icing and frosted.
Size
Cake sizes are named after the pan used. Full-size sheet pans measure 26 x 18 inches, too large for most home ovens. Half sheet pans are about 18 x 13 inches, similar to the largest supermarket sheet cakes. Quarter sheet pans are 9 x 13 inches, a common size for a regular box of cake mix, and typically yield 16 to 24 servings.
