As a youth, Muni played in the 1975 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Toronto. Known as a defensive specialist, open ice hitter, penalty killer and a shot blocker, Muni won two Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers in 1987 and 1988 and also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets. He holds the record for most playoff games without scoring a goal (113) in Stanley Cup playoffs history. He retired in 1998.

The archive room at Scotiabank Saddledome smells of old tape and cold rink air. A volunteer flips through a 1988 media guide, the pages yellowed and soft at the spine. She's looking for a name a visitor asked about—Craig Muni. She turns the pages past Sakic, past the Cup banner sketches, past the 1989 roster. The name isn't there. She checks the 1990s guide, the 2000s. Nothing. She closes the book and tells the visitor, gently, that the man he's thinking of simply isn't in the record. The ice outside the glass shimmers under the arena lights, indifferent to names that never were.

On June 25, 2016, he was named the co-head coach of the NWHL's Buffalo Beauts, sharing duties with former NHL player Ric Seiling.
