Shaw joined the Ottawa 67's of the OHL at age 17 in 1981–82. In his rookie season, he led all 67's defencemen with 72 points. In 1983–84, he helped the 67's win the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the Memorial Cup. He was named to the 1983–84 OHL first all-star team and won the Max Kaminsky Trophy. Drafted by Detroit in 1982, his rights were traded to Hartford in 1984. He played for Hartford from 1984–85 to 1991–92, then was traded to New Jersey and selected by Ottawa in the 1992 expansion draft. He played for Ottawa from 1992–93 to 1994–95, then joined the Detroit Vipers of the IHL as a player-assistant coach.

Brad Shaw is a former NHL defenseman who played for the Hartford Whalers, Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals, and St. Louis Blues. He never played for the Calgary Flames. He won the Eddie Shore Award twice as the AHL's best defenceman and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1989–90. He also won the Turner Cup with the Detroit Vipers and the Memorial Cup with the Ottawa 67's.
