Shaw joined the Ottawa 67's of the OHL at age 17 in 1981–82. In his rookie season, he led all 67's defencemen with 72 points (13 goals, 59 assists) in 68 games. In 1983–84, he scored 11 goals and 82 points in 68 games, helping Ottawa win the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the 1984 Memorial Cup. He was named to the OHL first all-star team and won the Max Kaminsky Trophy. Drafted by Detroit in the fifth round (86th overall) in 1982, his rights were traded to Hartford in May 1984. He debuted in the NHL on February 18, 1986, recording his first point on February 23, 1986. He scored his first NHL goal on March 29, 1989. He was named to the 1989–90 NHL All-Rookie Team. In June 1992, Hartford traded him to New Jersey, and five days later he was selected by Ottawa in the 1992 NHL expansion draft. He was named an alternate captain for the Senators and was on the ice for the opening faceoff in Ottawa's first game in 1992–93. He later played for Washington and St. Louis.

Brad Shaw played junior hockey for the Ottawa 67's, winning the Memorial Cup in 1984. He began his professional career in the Hartford Whalers organization, spending time in the AHL and IHL before becoming a regular NHL defenceman. He played for the Hartford Whalers, Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals, and St. Louis Blues. He served as an alternate captain for the Ottawa Senators. After his playing career, he became an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils.
