Juan Terry Trippe (June 27, 1899 – April 3, 1981) was an American commercial aviation pioneer, entrepreneur, and the founder of Pan American World Airways, one of the most iconic airlines of the 20th century. Born in Sea Bright, New Jersey, Trippe was the great-great-grandson of a naval captain. Despite his Spanish given name, he had no Hispanic ancestry; the name "Juan" came from his maternal grandmother’s second husband, a wealthy Irish colonist from Venezuela. Trippe leveraged this name advantageously when dealing with Latin American figures. He attended The Hill School and Yale University, but left Yale to train as a naval aviator during World War I, earning his wings and a commission as an ensign. After the war, he returned to Yale, where he joined the Skull and Bones society and served as treasurer at the first meeting of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association, graduating in 1921.
Trippe’s aviation career began in 1922 when he raised money from Yale classmates to launch Long Island Airways, an air-taxi service for the wealthy. He later invested in Colonial Air Transport, which secured an airmail contract in 1925. Seeking to operate in the Caribbean, he created the Aviation Corporation of the Americas in Florida, which evolved into Pan American Airways. Pan Am’s first flight took off on October 19, 1927, from Key West, Florida, to Havana, Cuba. Trippe was instrumental in introducing several landmark aircraft: the Sikorsky S-42, which opened trans-Pacific travel; the Boeing 307 Stratoliner, which brought cabin pressurization; the Boeing 707, which launched low-cost jet transportation; and the Boeing 747 jumbo jet. He also founded InterContinental Hotels & Resorts. Trippe served as chairman of Pan Am for nearly all of its early decades, and he is credited as the father of tourist class air travel. He gave up the presidency in 1968 but remained involved with the company. Trippe died of a stroke in 1981 and was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1970.
