Playing career

Tom Wandell began his professional path after being selected by the Dallas Stars in the fifth round, 146th overall, of the 2005 NHL draft while he was still with the Södertälje SK youth team. He first appeared in Sweden’s top league, the SHL, in the 2005–06 season. The following year, he played for Ässät in Finland’s Liiga before moving to North America, where he suited up for 53 games with the AHL’s Iowa Stars in 2007–08. Wandell made his NHL debut with Dallas in 2008–09, though he spent most of that season with Timrå IK back in the SHL. In just his second NHL game, on December 12, 2008, he scored his first career goal in a 3–1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

After six years in the Dallas organization, Wandell signed a two-year contract with HC Spartak Moscow of the KHL on May 3, 2013. During the 2014–15 season, he split time between Avangard Omsk and Admiral Vladivostok. On June 15, 2015, Admiral Vladivostok traded him to Amur Khabarovsk in one of the largest trades in KHL history. He played 55 games for Amur, recording four goals and twelve assists. Wandell left Amur after that season and signed a two-year deal with Örebro HK of the Swedish Hockey League in May 2016.

Following three seasons with Örebro, he became a free agent after the 2018–19 campaign. On May 10, 2019, he agreed to a one-year contract with Djurgårdens IF, his fourth SHL club.
