Playing career

Petrovicky got his start in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, representing a team from Poprad. He then crossed the Atlantic to play junior hockey in Canada’s Western Hockey League, suiting up for the Tri-City Americans, Prince George Cougars, and Regina Pats. It was during his time with the Cougars that the Calgary Flames picked him in the 1996 NHL entry draft. After signing with the Flames organization in 1998, he spent two seasons with their AHL affiliate before finally making the Calgary roster. Following two NHL seasons there, the New York Rangers claimed him off waivers in 2002. A year later, the Atlanta Thrashers did the same. When the NHL lockout hit, Petrovicky took his first pro gig in Europe, playing for Zilina and Brynas. He returned for one more season with the Thrashers before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins. For the 2007–08 season, he headed back to Europe, skating for Dukla Trencin, EV Zug, and Modo Hockey. He signed with Dinamo Riga for the 2008–09 campaign but was let go on December 24, 2008. Just before the 2009 NHL pre-season, the Vancouver Canucks brought him to training camp, only to release him on September 23, 2009.
