Playing career

Markus Korhonen got his start in the junior system of Ilves, the club from his hometown of Tampere. He then moved to TuTo for two seasons, where he worked as the backup goalie, first behind Timo Lehkonen and then Jukka Tammi. In 1996, he went back to Ilves to serve as Vesa Toskala's backup. His next stop was Kärpät, where he put up the best save percentage of his career but still found himself backing up Tim Thomas. Looking for a chance to be the number one, he joined Brynäs IF in Sweden's top league in 2003, starting 48 games as the team finished 10th out of 12. After eight games the following season, he left for Russia's Superleague, finishing the year with SKA St. Petersburg. He returned to Brynäs in 2005 for another 48-game stint. In 2006, he split the season between Malmö in Sweden and Lukko in Finland. He went back to Brynäs again in 2007. The 2008 season saw him play in Denmark's Oddset Ligaen for Esbjerg IK and in Austria's Erste Bank Eishockey Liga for Slovenia's HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, before returning to Ilves in January 2009. He hung up his skates after the 2009-10 season.
