Playing career

Fredrik Modin got his start in youth hockey with Njurunda SK, the same club that produced Henrik Zetterberg. The Toronto Maple Leafs picked him 64th overall in the 1994 NHL draft. On October 1, 1999, Toronto traded him to the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he later wore an alternate captain's 'A' for multiple seasons. In 2001, Modin was Tampa Bay's sole representative at the 51st NHL All-Star Game and won the Hardest Shot competition with a 102.1 mph slapshot. He helped the Lightning capture the Stanley Cup in the 2003–04 season. When the NHL locked out its players for the 2004–05 season, Modin went back to Sweden and played for Timrå IK, notching 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points. On June 30, 2006, the Lightning traded him and Fredrik Norrena to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Marc Denis. Modin served as an alternate captain in Columbus, but his production slipped as injuries piled up. He scored a goal in Game 4 of the Blue Jackets' first-ever playoff series, against the Detroit Red Wings. At the 2010 trade deadline, on March 3, Columbus sent him to the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations. On September 6, 2010, he signed a one-year free-agent deal with the Atlanta Thrashers, scoring 7 goals in 36 games. On February 28, 2011, Atlanta traded him to the Calgary Flames for a seventh-round pick in the 2011 draft. A lingering back injury hampered his final two seasons, and Modin announced his retirement on May 19, 2011.
