Critical reception

Springsteen on Broadway received widespread critical acclaim. On Metacritic, which normalizes ratings out of 100, the album scored 87 based on 15 reviews. Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph wrote that while the album lacks the musical expanse of Springsteen's work with the E Street Band, it remains as powerful as any album he has made, praising its autobiographical dimension and Springsteen's humor as an onstage anecdotist. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian observed that listeners will learn Springsteen's recording persona is as much a contrived character as David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, calling the blend of homespun wisdom, frankness, and yarn-spinning genuinely enthralling.

Jamie Atkins of Record Collector hailed the performance as a new type of rock show, noting Springsteen's connection with his audience, storytelling ability, humor, and pathos. Will Hermes in Rolling Stone described the album as by turns audiobook, podcast, and live album, most potent as a hybrid of the three. Kitty Empire regarded it as located between a TED talk, VH1's Storytellers, and a confessional, calling it a hugely nourishing listen. Robert Christgau, in his Vice column, said he was impressed despite never being big on extended spoken-word material or solo-acoustic remakes.
