History
Clive Davis, the head of Columbia Records, heard an early version of Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and decided it needed a single. Springsteen wrote this track and “Spirit in the Night” to fill that gap. He used a rhyming dictionary to find the right words. The opening line—“Madman drummers, bummers, and Indians in the summers with a teenage diplomat”—comes from his own life.
“Madman drummers” points to drummer Vini Lopez, who was called “Mad Man” (later “Mad Dog”). “Indians in the summer” is the name of his old Little League team. “Teenage diplomat” is Springsteen himself. The line “as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat” comes from his aunt Dora Kirby, who said Bruce never took off his baseball cap.
“Merry-go-round” is baseball slang for a pitcher who keeps walking batters. The rest of the song jumps between unrelated events, held together by the refrain “Blinded by the light, cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night.” By “Deuce,” Springsteen meant a Deuce Coupe—a 1932 Ford hot rod, running fast. “Blinded by the Light” was the first single from Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. Cash Box compared it to early Bob Dylan, especially “My Back Pages,” and said Springsteen unleashes a barrage of images.
Record World called its lyrics some of the cleverest he ever wrote and predicted the song would launch him toward a bright career.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band version
Manfred Mann's Earth Band put their own spin on "Blinded by the Light" for their 1976 album The Roaring Silence. Near the end of the bridge, the piano plays a snippet of the "Chopsticks" melody. The single climbed to number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Canada's RPM charts. This recording remains Bruce Springsteen's only number one hit as a songwriter on the Hot 100.
Record World described the track as having a synthesized intro that calls to mind "Won't Get Fooled Again," after which the band hits full throttle. In 2024, Mann credited Supertramp's "Dreamer" as inspiration for the synth hook. The Earth Band's version alters some of Springsteen's original lyrics, most notably swapping "cut loose like a deuce" in the chorus for "revved up like a deuce." That line references the 1932 Ford with a V8 engine, a car hot rod fans called the "deuce coupe" because the "2" in 1932 marked the first year that engine was available.
Springsteen had a youthful passion for classic hot rods, which explains the lyric. The phrase has become a classic mondegreen, often misheard as "wrapped up like a douche." Springsteen himself has joked about the confusion, claiming the song only became a hit after Manfred Mann turned it into a tune about a feminine hygiene product. According to Mann, drummer Chris Slade suggested using the chords from "Chopsticks" as a transition between sections, though that tune was already part of the arrangement.
The mishearing stems from technical issues in the recording, which become clear when compared to live performances. The musicians on the track include Manfred Mann on organ, piano, Minimoog, backing vocals, and lead vocals; Chris Hamlet Thompson on lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Dave Flett on lead guitar; Colin Pattenden on bass; and Chris Slade on drums and backing vocals. Additional backing vocalists are Doreen Chanter, Irene Chanter, and Susanne Lynch.
In 2007, the German duo Michael Mind remixed the Earth Band's version, which then reached number six in Finland and number twelve in Germany.
