The Devil's Hour
A social worker haunted by visions and a serial killer case.
The Devil's Hour is a British drama thriller series created by Tom Moran. It was executive produced by Sue Vertue and Steven Moffat through their company Hartswood Films. The first season, made up of six episodes, launched on Amazon Prime Video on 28 October 2022. A second and third season were later ordered; the second season arrived on 18 October 2024.
The story follows Lucy Chambers, a social worker whose life is falling apart. She wakes every night at exactly 3:33 AM, plagued by terrifying visions during what is called the "devil's hour," and experiences brief flashes of these visions during the day. Her eight-year-old son is emotionally withdrawn and claims to see people no one else can. Her mother, who has dementia and schizophrenia, also appears to see invisible figures. Lucy’s home is haunted by echoes of a life that does not belong to her. Her name is mysteriously linked to a string of brutal local murders, pulling her into the hunt for a serial killer.
The cast includes Jessica Raine as Lucy Chambers, a social worker who also exists as a detective inspector in another version of her life. Peter Capaldi plays Gideon Shepherd, a criminal who can "remember" the future. Nikesh Patel portrays Detective Inspector Ravi Dhillon, who has a fear of blood. Alex Ferns is his partner, Detective Sergeant Nick Holness. Meera Syal appears as Ruby Bennett, a child psychologist treating Lucy’s son Isaac. Barbara Marten plays Sylvia Chambers, Lucy’s mother. Phil Dunster appears as Mike Stevens, Lucy’s estranged husband and Isaac’s father. Benjamin Chivers plays Isaac. Saffron Hocking, Thomas Dominique, and Rhiannon Harper-Rafferty also appear in later episodes.
The series was first announced in December 2019, with Tom Moran developing it for Amazon. In June 2021, Amazon gave the green light. Moran wrote and created the series, executive producing alongside Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue. Hartswood Films produced it. Directors Johnny Allan and Isabelle Sieb were attached to episodes. Casting for the leads—Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi—was announced in mid-June 2021, along with the rest of the ensemble.
The title sequence, created by Peter Anderson Studio in London, uses kaleidoscopic effects and bright colour overlays to suggest a "vortex." The score was composed by the Newton Brothers, and the soundtrack album came out on 28 October 2022, the same day as the seri

Lore & Background
The series follows Lucy Chambers, a social worker who wakes every night at 3:33 AM after terrifying visions during the 'devil's hour' and experiences snippets of visions during the day. Her eight-year-old son Isaac is withdrawn and emotionless, claiming to see people others do not, while her mother Sylvia speaks to empty chairs. Lucy's house is haunted by echoes of a life not her own, and her name is inexplicably connected to a string of brutal murders, drawing her into the hunt for a serial killer. The cast includes Jessica Raine as Lucy, Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shepherd, a mysterious criminal who 'remembers' the future, and Nikesh Patel as Detective Inspector Ravi Dhillon with haemophobia.
