The Catch follows Ed Collier, a local fisherman struggling to make a living due to competition. His daughter Abbie introduces her new boyfriend Ryan, who is young, handsome, rich, and successful. Ed becomes suspicious of Ryan, while his wife Claire attributes his distrust to overprotectiveness stemming from the loss of their son in a boating accident 15 years earlier. Ed teams up with Abbie's ex-boyfriend George to investigate Ryan's past and is startled by what he finds. He follows Ryan to a red-light district and films him with a young woman, then confronts Ryan in front of the family. Ryan's explanation is acceptable, causing Ed's family to turn against him. The situation darkens when an ominous threatening message appears painted on the decking of Ed's boat.
