Crime Traveller

A detective uses a time machine to solve crimes.

In 1997, the BBC and Carnival Films produced a sci-fi detective show called Crime Traveller, where time travel helped solve crimes. Anthony Horowitz created and wrote every episode. Though it regularly drew over eight million viewers, the series ended after one season. Horowitz later explained that a new BBC drama head arrived during its run, leaving no one to order more episodes.

Plot

Jeff Slade is a detective with the Criminal Investigation Department of the local police force led by Kate Grisham. Unusually for his position, he is an armed officer carrying a handgun as routine. Slade is a good detective who gets results, though his maverick approach and methods have landed him in trouble. Among his colleagues is science officer Holly Turner, who owns a working time machine built by her late father. The machine allows Slade and Holly to travel back in time to witness a crime as it happens and discover who committed it, dramatically improving Slade's crime-solving record.

Cast

The time machine is kept in Holly Turner's apartment. She is a forensic scientist, and her father invented the device. Only Holly and DI Jeff Slade, a city detective played by Michael French, know it exists. Slade's irritable boss is DCI Kate Grisham, played by Sue Johnston, and he constantly annoys her. His slow-witted colleague DS Morris, played by Paul Trussell, often takes credit for Slade's work. DC Nicky Robson, played by Richard Dempsey, is a posh, intelligent but naive trainee detective who is too trusting. Danny, played by Bob Goody, is the apartment block caretaker who must fix the power outages caused by the time machine.
