Series 2 — The Time Break Initiative & Fractured Loyalties

The second series escalates the stakes from personal tragedy to existential unraveling. George administers a memory serum to Sarah, and Wes recruits her into the team. They uncover the Time Break Initiative, a multinational organization led by Wes's husband Lerner, which has been developing a Time Machine since at least the early 2010s. Their 21 July 2024 test created the second singularity and the destructive loop. To stop the universe from unraveling, the Initiative kidnaps former agent Janet and her daughter Becky, sending them back to 1 July 2012 to help perfect the technology. The Lazarus team accumulates over 35 loops' worth of experience before tracking down the sole surviving Initiative scientist, Samson. Wes reprograms a mission meant for 2023, secretly directing the team to 2012 to eliminate eight key scientists. Sarah, however, betrays the group, killing the scientists and 2024 Janet after being convinced the technology is too dangerous to exist. George flees with the survivors, including two versions of Becky, to 22 July 2024, breaking the loop. In the aftermath, he discovers Sarah alive, having lived through twelve years and taken over as Lazarus leader.

Production, Cast & Brief Run

The Lazarus Project was created by Joe Barton and produced by Urban Myth Films, with a trio of directors — Marco Kreuzpaintner, Akaash Meeda, and Laura Scrivano — guiding the series. Under its working title Extinction, principal photography took place in the second quarter of 2021 across Cardiff and Bristol. The ensemble cast, headlined by Essiedu as George, includes Anjli Mohindra as Archie, Rudi Dharmalingam as Shiv, Charly Clive as Sarah, Caroline Quentin as team lead Wes, and Tom Burke as the disillusioned former agent Rebrov. The show premiered on Sky Max on 16 June 2022 and was renewed for a second series in August 2022, which arrived on 15 November 2023. Despite the ambitious scope of its premise and the strong creative team behind it, the series was cancelled in March 2024 after just two seasons, leaving the universe's fate — and the long-term trajectory of George, Sarah, and the Lazarus team — unresolved on screen.
