History

Before securing a major record deal, the group recorded six albums. They signed to East West Records, then home of The Darkness, after label executive Korda Marshall heard their music played by members of The Darkness while on tour; GLC later supported The Darkness on the latter stages of their UK tour. Their first UK chart entry was "Half Man Half Machine", which reached the Top 40. When BBC chart presenter Wes phoned group member Rhys Hutchings on the Official Chart Show to inform him, Xain told the rest of the band they had reached number 1, shocking the DJ.

The song, about Eggsy believing he was a robot, dressing in foil, and going to shops for cigarettes and crisps, namechecks 1980s 8-bit computer systems such as Binatone, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, ZX81 and BBC Micro. In August 2004 the group reached number three with "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do", a satire of American hip hop whose B-side was "Soapbar". Their first nationally released album, titled Greatest Hits as a play on their previous lack of commercial success and stoner image, compiled new material and selections from their six earlier unofficial albums; it debuted at number 5 in September 2004.

The US release, Straight Outta Newport, had cover art similar to N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton and omitted "Maggot" and "You Knows I Loves You". The next single, "Your Mother's Got a Penis", with a supermarket-themed video, reached number 14 in the UK; it first appeared on the album The Manifesto.

Sponsorship of Newport County Football Club

Since their early 2000s inception, the group have been closely linked with Newport County. They sponsored the team's kit for the 2004–05 season, originally only for FAW Premier Cup matches. County wore the GLC-sponsored shirt in two league games after being drawn away to Caernarfon Town, who had similar-coloured shirts. In 2021 they designed Newport's third kit with Hummel.
