Incredible Games

A children's game show set in a tower with a talking lift.

Incredible Games is a children's game show that originally aired from 30 January to 1 May 1994 on BBC2 and then from 10 January to 28 March 1995 on BBC1. It included a variety of games, performed by contestants between the ages of 10 and 13. The show itself was set in a fictional skyscraper (which was depicted in the titles by a London council tower block, Trellick Tower, in North Kensington) with a talking lift. In the first series, the lift was played by David Walliams, who later starred in Little Britain. In the second series, the lift was given a name, Sam, and was played by Gary Parker.

Format

The objective was to complete each game, located on a floor of the skyscraper, and rise upward. In the first series, the climax was the alphabet soup game; in the second series, reaching the penthouse allowed prizes to be won. During series two, a losing player was sent to the basement laundry room, and the other contestants had to take the lift back down to rescue them. The first series had lift doors opening directly into each game, while the second series showed a generic corridor with doors, one lit to indicate the correct room.

Occasionally in series two, the lift opened onto a darkened corridor where a dark knight walked slowly toward the lift, forcing contestants to close the doors quickly. Notable games included Alphabet Soup, in which giant letters were fished from a swimming pool to form words on a fridge, and The Dark Knight, where contestants moved one square per turn on a chessboard, with each forward move requiring a sidestep, while the dark knight could only see the last lit move.
