Robin Hood was created by Dominic Minghella and Foz Allan, who served as executive producers, with Minghella as chief writer. The first series had a reported budget of £8 million and was designed to run in the Saturday evening family drama slot vacated by Doctor Who. Filming took place in Hungary, and the programme was shot in high definition and broadcast on BBC HD. The series was announced as a possible commission by BBC One Controller Peter Fincham in July 2005 and confirmed by Head of Drama Jane Tranter on 24 October 2005. Jonas Armstrong was cast as Robin Hood, confirmed by the BBC on 3 April 2006. The first series comprised thirteen 45-minute episodes.
