Series overview

Open auditions were held the previous year, with judge's auditions taking place early in 2008 in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and Blackpool. The production team expanded the filming schedule to include more episodes, adding two more audition episodes and two more live semi-final episodes. This increased the number of semi-finalists the judges could advance beyond auditions. The judges and presenters from the first series all returned. Forty participants made it to five live semi-finals, with eight appearing in each; ten acts reached the live final. The table below lists each participant's overall results. Ages shown are for the participant's final performance; for dogs, the age is as disclosed by the owner. Cowell pressed Holden's buzzer during Vizage's performance. Only the winner, second place and third place were declared.

Criticism

The series faced criticism over the involvement of professional performers. Media outlets noted that the group Escala had performed as guests at a wrap party for The X Factor in 2007. ITV denied any unfair conduct, stating that researchers applied the same process to all auditionees and that the contest was open regardless of experience.
