Sigi Friedmann
Fourth-generation brewmaster and youngest master brewer in Germany.
Sigi Friedmann (born 1961) runs Friedmann's Brewery in Gräfenberg, Bavaria. She took over the family business from her father in 1982, becoming Germany's youngest master brewer at the time. She is the fourth generation to hold that title.
Though she grew up in a brewing family—the brewery first appears in local records from 1875—Friedmann initially wanted to travel and spend time with her family, not become a brewer. Her father sent her to Munich to train as a chemical and technical assistant for lab work, but without her knowledge, he had actually enrolled her in a master brewer program. She excelled as a student, outperforming most of her male peers in the final exam.
Today, Friedmann runs a modern, environmentally sustainable operation. She has installed an automatic filling system, an eco-friendly cleaning system, and rebuilt the brewhouse. The brewery delivers only within a 30-kilometer radius of Gräfenberg. Its beers include "Ritter Wirnt Trunk," named after a local historical figure, a popular Festbier, an unusual Pils, and "Sigis Lager." The brewery has won a European Beer Star Award.
Friedmann plans to hand the business to her daughter, Barbara, who studied brewing and beverage technology at Weihenstephan. Barbara Friedmann-Merkel now works as a brewer and managing director at the brewery.
