Pivovar Broumov

Traditional Czech brewery with monastery origins and a brewing museum.

Last updated

Pivovar Broumov, a small brewery in the east Bohemian town of Broumov (in the Olivětín district), makes light, amber, and dark beers. These come in filtered and unfiltered forms, including lagers, draught beers, and specialty brews. The brewery also produces flavored beers with fruit, spice, or herbal additions.

History and present

The brewery’s roots go back to 1348, though the current operation continues the work of a brewery originally housed in the Benedictine monastery in Broumov, founded in 1712. References to that monastery brewery exist from the late 1600s.

After World War II, a new brewhouse was built and bottling began. Since 1994, a new bottling line has been in use, and wort is now stored in stainless steel barrels. At the Milevsko Beer Festival, the beer Polotmavá sváteční kvasnicová 17% (Amber Festive Yeast 17%) won the Silver Crown for best beer.

Nearby, a pond of about 0.75 hectares supplies water for the brewery’s technological processes. In the past, ice was harvested from this pond in winter for cooling during beer production.

Ingredients for beer production

Malt comes from the brewery’s own classic drum malt house. Hop cones from Žatec and first-class brewing yeast are used, and water is drawn from a 38-meter-deep artesian well.

Beer production

The brewery preserves traditional production methods. Its beers are sold under the brands Olivětínský Opat, Benediktin, and Rotter.

The range includes light, amber, and dark beers, along with a steady and rotating selection of specials. Besides standard filtered beers, the brewery offers a unique line of unfiltered beers, as well as flavored varieties. An on-site store in the brewery complex sells these beers and souvenirs.

Brewery tour and brewing museum

Guided tours of the brewery include beer tastings and visits to the malt house, cellars, and bottling facility. The complex also houses a brewing museum with an extensive collection of historical equipment, machinery, and tools for malting and brewing. The tour includes a stylized pub from the early 1900s and the old brewmaster’s office. On the museum’s first floor, an exhibition displays the brewmaster’s household from the early 20th century, in the Art Nouveau style.

Lore & Background

The origins of the brewery can be traced back to 1348. The current brewery continues the activities of a brewery originally located in the Benedictine monastery in Broumov, founded in 1712. References to the local monastery brewery exist from the end of the 17th century. After World War II, a new brewhouse was built and the brewery began bottling its beer.

Since 1994, a new bottling facility has been in operation, and its wort is stored in stainless steel barrels. At the Milevsko Beer Festival, the beer Polotmavá sváteční kvasnicová 17% (Amber Festive Yeast 17%) won the Silver Crown for the best beer. Near the brewery is a pond with an area of approximately 0.75 ha, which currently serves as a water supply for the technological part of the brewery; in the past, it was used during winter to obtain ice for cooling processes.
