Dortmunder Actien Brauerei
Last remaining brewery in Dortmund, known for its DAB lager.

Dortmunder Actien Brauerei (DAB) is a German brewery located in the city of Dortmund. Founded in 1868 by businessmen Laurenz Fischer, Heinrich and Friedrich Mauritz, and master brewer Heinrich Herberz, it was originally called Herberz & Co Brewery. The company went public in 1872 and changed its name to Dortmunder Actien Brauerei (Dortmund Joint Stock Brewery). It is notable for being the last remaining brewery in Dortmund.
Lore & Background
The brewery expanded steadily after its founding and went public in 1872, adopting its current name. International beer exports began in 1879. In 1881, Carl von Linde himself equipped the brewery with one of his refrigeration machines, enabling a boom in bottom-fermented beer. A chemical and bacteriological laboratory was established in 1893.
World War I caused a crash in beer production, but the brewery gained its own railway connection in 1917. After near-total destruction of Dortmund in World War II, the brewery was rebuilt by 1949. From 1959 to 1963, DAB switched from wooden to aluminum barrels.
In 1971, it acquired the local competitor Hansa Brewery. A new modern brewery was erected on its grounds and finished in 1983, at the time the largest in the Ruhr area. However, the cost of the Hansa acquisition burdened DAB for years, and questionable management decisions in the 1990s worsened the situation, leading to a collapse of company brands and increased production of generic brands.
Even acquiring the brand names of another local competitor, Kronen Brewery, could not stop the downward trend, which has not been fully stopped to this day. The most prominent stockholder today is the Radeberger Group, which belongs to the company founded by August Oetker. DAB produces a lager called DAB after its initials. DAB was the favorite beer of Erich Honecker, former leader of East Germany.
Reader's Guide
Dortmunder Actien Brauerei holds significance as the last surviving brewery in Dortmund, a city once known for its brewing industry. Its history reflects the broader trajectory of German industrial brewing: early expansion, technological adoption (such as Carl von Linde's refrigeration), and resilience through two world wars. The acquisition of Hansa Brewery in 1971 and later the Kronen Brewery brand names illustrate consolidation trends in the German beer market. However, financial strain from the Hansa purchase and poor management in the 1990s led to a decline from which the company has not fully recovered.
Its current ownership by the Radeberger Group, part of the August Oetker conglomerate, ties it to one of Germany's largest food and drink companies. The brewery's legacy includes its DAB lager, notably favored by East German leader Erich Honecker, and its role in producing Hansa beers, which gained popularity in the punk subculture due to low price. The former Hansa facility also houses the Dortmunder Brewery Museum.
