Scolymia lacera, known as the fleshy disk coral, is a stony coral from the family Mussidae. It lives on shallow reefs in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and southern Florida. Unlike colonial corals, it consists of a single, solitary polyp that does not grow by budding. This small species reaches up to 6 centimeters across, and the radial ridges of its stony cup are visible through the polyp’s fleshy body. Its color is variable, typically a shade of greenish-brown.
It closely resembles *Scolymia cubensis*, which shares much of its range. The main differences lie in the arrangement of the septa—the tiny ridges inside the calcareous cups where the polyps sit. *S. lacera* tends to occupy brighter spots, while *S. cubensis* prefers shadier locations. When the two meet, *S. lacera* is the more aggressive.
The coral grows on reefs, rocky outcrops, and steep reef slopes at depths of 15 to 80 meters. Its tissues contain symbiotic zooxanthellae, single-celled algae that photosynthesize and provide organic compounds for the coral. This supplies most of its energy, but it also extends short tentacles at night to catch plankton. *S. lacera* aggressively attacks neighboring corals that might block its light. It extrudes filaments several centimeters long from its mesenteries; when these touch another coral, they release enzymes that digest its soft tissues over several hours. Smaller corals may be killed, while larger ones can have the affected area stripped down to the skeleton.
The IUCN Red List classifies this species as critically endangered. Threats include rising sea temperatures and coral bleaching, more intense storms, ocean acidification, coral diseases, and various human impacts.
