Background

Brewster had made three defenses of the WBO belt since upsetting Wladimir Klitschko, stopping two challengers. He underwent laser eye surgery in Los Angeles weeks before the fight, and it was speculated he continued to fulfill contractual obligations to promoter Don King. Liakhovich, a Belarusian-born former Olympian living in Scottsdale, Arizona, had not fought since December 2004 after an injury prevented a late-2005 Showtime appearance.

Aftermath

Brewster acknowledged Liakhovich deserved the win and expressed eagerness for a rematch. It was later revealed Brewster had suffered a detached retina in his left eye during the first round, requiring surgery that sidelined him for over a year. Liakhovich made his first defense in November against former lineal heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, who stopped him in the final round.
