Playing career

Poitras was selected 12th overall by the Guelph Storm in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, but his first season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2022–23 season, he tied for fifth in total points in the league with 95 and was named OHL Player of the Week on November 21, 2022. The Boston Bruins chose him 54th overall in the second round of the 2022 NHL entry draft. On April 14, 2023, the Providence Bruins signed Poitras to an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of the 2022–23 season, though he did not appear in any games. On May 5, 2023, the Boston Bruins signed him to a three-year, entry-level contract. After impressing in his first preseason, Poitras made the NHL roster as a 19-year-old. He earned his first NHL point, an assist on a goal by Trent Frederic, in his first NHL game. On October 22, 2023, he scored his first and second NHL goals in a 3–1 win against the Anaheim Ducks. On October 31, the Bruins announced Poitras would remain on the NHL roster rather than return to the OHL, burning a year of his entry-level contract. On December 18, 2023, he was loaned to Team Canada for the 2024 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he registered two goals and two assists in five games as Canada finished fifth. He returned to the NHL on January 6, 2024. On January 9, three games after returning, he left a game against the Arizona Coyotes with a shoulder injury. He returned on January 20 but played only three more games before undergoing shoulder surgery on February 7, ending his season. Poitras finished his rookie season with five goals and 15 points in 33 games.
