Otsutsuki Invasion

A mark of destiny seals a boy's fate as an ancient clan returns to claim the world.

The Otsutsuki invasion arc in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations centers on the arrival of Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, a member of the celestial clan who seeks to harvest Chakra from Earth. This threat emerges after Momoshiki and Kinshiki abduct Seventh Hokage Naruto Uzumaki to use Kurama's power to revitalize their dying Divine Tree. Following Boruto's rescue of his father, Momoshiki places a 'Karma' mark on him, signaling that the Ōtsutsuki will eventually resurrect through the host. The narrative deepens when Kara's leader, Jigen, is revealed to be possessed by Isshiki, who had been betrayed by Kaguya millennia ago and now seeks Kawaki as his new vessel.

Lore & Background

The invasion is driven by Karma, a seal allowing Ōtsutsuki members to resurrect via their hosts. Momoshiki places this mark on Boruto after being defeated alongside Kinshiki during their attempt to drain Kurama. Later, Kara's leader Jigen is exposed as a vessel for Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, who survived Kaguya's betrayal thousands of years ago. Sasuke learns that all Karma users, including Boruto and Jigen, will eventually be taken over by the clan. When Isshiki attempts to take Kawaki, Naruto confronts him directly. Kurama sacrifices himself to limit Isshiki's lifespan, causing the ancient enemy to die shortly after. Before his death, Momoshiki seizes control of Boruto's body to kill others, but Sasuke and Kawaki intervene until Boruto regains control.

Reader's Guide

The conflict begins with the abduction of Naruto Uzumaki by Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, who aim to use Kurama's power to revive their Divine Tree. Boruto, Sasuke, and the four Kage intervene, saving Naruto but resulting in Momoshiki placing a 'Karma' mark on Boruto before his death. The threat escalates when Kara's leader Jigen is exposed as Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, who has been possessing him since Kaguya betrayed him millennia ago. Amado reveals that Karma allows Ōtsutsuki resurrection via hosts, meaning both Boruto and Jigen are at risk of full conversion.

When Isshiki targets Kawaki for a new vessel, Naruto confronts him directly. Kurama sacrifices himself to shorten Isshiki's lifespan, leading to his death. Later Momoshiki resurrects in Boruto and tries to kill Naruto, and Boruto asks Kawaki to kill him to take Momoshiki down with him. Meanwhile, Code releases Eida and Daemon, cyborgs created by Amado who were supposed to be disposed of.
